Tokyo Rockabilly Club

Tokyo Rockabilly Club

Before Harajuku became the haunt of teen girls decked out in goth, lolita, and cosplay garb (aka Karajuku girls) it was the home to a different breed of gatherers - the Rockabillies.

Inspired by 1950's American Rock-n-roll culture (Elvis in particular), groups of '50s die-hards have gathered in Yoyogi Park in Tokyo, Japan since the 1970s. They spend Sunday afternoons hanging out in the park wearing plenty of black leather, gyrating to '50s music, and sporting rather large hairdos.

Michael John Grist describes them on his blog as "A bunch of yakuza-looking guys just dancing their hip-shaking hearts out to ‘Rockabilly’ music- a mix of rock and roll and hillbilly country."
